i think the reason why Uchiha Itachi killed his clan, because the elders of konoha ask him to do it so,
because the elders thinks that the Uchiha clan is too powerful, because of their power they can invade the whole country of fire, as well as the neighbor countries.

yea. itachi is not bad. he killed his clan because his father plan to have a revolt against konoha.
and itachi dont like war thats why he did it. and the reason why he didnt killed sasuke is because he really love sasuke and he cnt do it. too bad sasuke will kill her own brother before he knows the truth.

itachi want sasuke to become powerful so that he can get sasuke's eye for his own good, because itachi's eye blurring and close to blindness, their story is almost the same as madara uchiha, madara uchiha notice the side effect of the mangekyou sharingan so he forcely poke his brother's eye and combined it to his eys that's why he acquire the limitless usage of his mangekyou as well as his immortality.

and another yes. look at my siggy. the 3rd and 2nd to the last sharingans are madara's and his brother's sharingan. and the last sharingan is the outcome of fusing it together.

itachi will die because he will protect sasuke from madara.
i think after that incident sasuke will obtain the ultimate mangekgyou sharingan.
